ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

1963-1966: Researcher assistant in Institute of Sea biology in Kotor, Crna Gora.

1966-1972: Assistant Professor in the Biological Institute in Podgorica, Crna Gora, head of the benthos investigation Unit.

1972-1976: Senior Researcher in the Biological Institute in Podgorica.

1976-1980: Researcher and Scientific Advisor in dept. of Hydrobiology, Institute for Biological

        and Medical research of Montenegro, Podgorica.

1980-1982: General Director of Institute for Biological and Medical research in Montenegro.

1983-1990: Researcher and Scientific Advisor in dept. of Hydrobiology, Institute for Biological

         and Medical research of Montenegro, head of the benthos research Unit

1991-2004: Full Professor at the University of Podgorica, Montenegro [Zoology of Invertebrata,

         Ecology and Zoogeography]

1996-1997, and 2002-2004 head of the Dept. of Biology, University of Podgorica.

1997- Secretary of the Natural Science Departmant, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts.

2004-2014: retired, but continuing at the same University teach a lesson to the Masters and PhD

          students

2009-2010: teaching on the University Donja Gorica” Podgorica [Philosophy of Zoology;

          Biodiversity and its protection].

 

RESEARCH WORK

--Research of the zoobenthos of the Mediterranean Sea.

--Research of the zoobenthos of the freshwaters (rivers, lakes, springs, subterranean waters).

--Research of the cave fauna, including Amphipoda.

-Taxonomy, ecology and zoogeography of the freshwater epigean and subterranean Amphipoda

  (Crustacea) over the World.

--Taxonomy, ecology and zoogeography of the marine Amphipoda (Crustacea) over the World.

--Problems of the protection of the biodiversity and sustainable development

--Relations between zoology and philosophy in the light of the use of taxonomical categories

--Research the taxonomy and distribution of ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in Balkan

Coauthor of the Monography: The families and genera of marine Gammaridean Amphipoda (Except Marine Gammaroids). Part 1 and 2. - Records of the Australian Museum, Supplement 13 (parts 1 and 2): 1-866.

Coordinator and Coauthor of the Monography: Ruffo, S. [ed.]. The Amphipoda of the Mediterranean. In 4 volumens [1982-1993]:

Coordinator and Coeditor of the Monography: The biota and Limnology of Skadar Lake, 468 pages, 135 figs, 107 pls, Titograd 1980.

In recognition for his scientific research, various scientists dedicated him newly discovered genera and species (genus Gordania, Rhipidogammarus gordankaramani, Elasmopus karamani, etc).

 

GENERAL ACTIVITY

He was very engaged in the forming of Department of Biology within the Faculty of Natural Sciences in Podgorica, engaged in the realization of this endeavor, as member of the Organizing Committee for the foundation of the Museum of Natural Sciences in Podgorica, that opened in 1995

He was member of various Editorial Boards of scientici Journals (Acta Adriatica Split (Croatia),

----Member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal “Biologia Serbica”, Novi Sad, Serbia

----Member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal “Journal Contributions Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Skopje, Macedonia, etc,

And Now is Editor for Amphipoda in scientific journal ZOOTAXA, member of editor board of scientific journal Agronomy and Forestry Podgorica, Member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal “Journal Contributions Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Skopje, Macedonia; Member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal “Journal of Science”, University of Kragujevac, Serbia etc,

On 2008 was organized International Congress in Bijela in Montenegro  dedicated to 70 yeears of life and 50 years of his scientific work receiving the plaque of the organizer and special ceramic plaque of the Zoological Institute of National Academy of Ukraina.

--On 15th International Congress of Amphipoda in Poland (2013) received the glass plaque “in appreciation of his life-long work proving that Amphipoda are his way of life”.

In recognition for his 80 years of lite and 60 years of his scientific work, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts dedicated his PROCEEDINGS OF THE SECTION OF NATURAL SCIENCES, 23, 2019 to Academician Gordan S. Karaman.

However, even after his retirement, Academician Karaman has continued his scientific, research and pedagogical work. [See References]
