Branislav Šoškić

Academician prof.dr Branislav Šoškić is a full member of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 1973), European Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 1992), and Serbian Scientific Society (since 1969). He is the (first) Honorary (longlife) President of the Scientific Society of Economists (since 2002) and of the Academy of Economic Sciences of Serbia and Montenegro (since 2008). He is the Emeritus Professor and the Rector of the International Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies of the European Center for Peace and Development of the University for Peace established by the United Nations.

He finished his elementary and secondary education in Novi Pazar and Berane. At the Faculty of Economics of Belgrade University he graduated (as the best in his generation, 1951), he received his Ph.D in Economics (1954), had been chosen for the Lecture (1955), Associate Professor (1960) and Full Professor (since 1965). He was the Dean of that Faculty (1964-65 and 1965-67) and the Director of the Institute of Economic Research (1961-86). Several times and several academic years he was the Visiting Scholar and later (Distinguished Fulbright) Visiting Professor at the Universities in the United Kingdom (St. Andrews, 1955-56, and Cambridge, 1956-57), USA (Harvard, Berkeley, 1962-63, Florida State and South Florida 1971-72, 1973-74, 1974-75, 1977-78, Texas-Tech 1978-79) and in many other countries (in Europe, Asia and Africa).

At the foreign academies of sciences and universities academician Šoškić delivered numerous lectures and papers at the international scientific conferences (Paris, Sofia, Bratislava, Rapelo, Venice, Moscow, Ostin, New York, Balatonfired, Lodj, Hale, Nijenrode, Emeronvil, Salzburg, Warsaw, Prague, Poznanj, Weimar, Budapest, Plzen, Berlin, Rostok, Geneva, Berkeley, Leningrad, Sorento, Nju Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Madras, Calcutta, Vienna, Bucharest, Labok, Dar Es Salam, Morogore, Seychelles, Beijing, Kitakuiši, etc.).

Academician Šoškić was the President of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (1981-83 and 1983-85), the President of the Presidency of all Academies of Sciences and Arts of SFR Yugoslavia (1981-1985) and the (first) President of (Yugoslav) inter-academies Board of Economic Sciences. Besides, he was the President of the Yugoslav Commission for Unesco (1984-88) and the member (1984-85) and the President (1985-86) of the Presidency of Montenegro. He was the President of the Scientific Society of Economists of Yugoslavia and, later, of Serbia and Montenegro (1994-98 and 1998-2002), and the (first) President of the Yugoslav Academy of Economic Sciences (later, of Serbia and Montenegro, 1998-2008).

Academician Šoškić has published over 400 scientific and professional works, papers and articles (many of them presented at Yugoslav and international symposia, in Serbian and foreign languages (English, French, Russian, Spanish, German, Italian, Czech, Polish, Bulgarian, Albanian). His best known books are: The Development of Economic Thought (awarded, as the best university textbook, by Belgrade University, 1970), (1965, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1978); Production, Employment and Stabilization (1970, 1972, 1973); Income Distribution in a Market Economy (received the October Award of Belgrade, 1971 (1971, 1974); Theory of Value – Classical Economic Analysis (1971); Economic Analysis I and II (1972, 1973); Economic Price of Education (1974, 1983); Economic Doctrines (received the 13 July Award, 1977) (1975, 1976, 1980, 1983); Economic Thought and Economic Policy (1978, 1980, 1989). He received the higher Yugoslav scientific award AVNOJ, 1984.

Academician Šoškić has entered in all Yugoslav, Serbian and Montenegrin and many International Encyclopaedias: Who’s who in Yugoslavia, Small Encyclopedia Prosveta, Who’s who in Serbia, Who’s who in Montenegro; Who’s who in the World, International Book of Honour, Men of Achievement, International Register of Profiles, Biography International, International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, Millennium Hall of Fame, Five Hundred Leaders of Influence, International Who’s who of Contemporary Achievement, The Man of the Year 1997 and others.

Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts honoured him publishing the proceeding/book entitled “Scientific Thought of academician Branislav Šoškić” (1994).

He is included in the well-know Encyclopedia (in Serbian and English) “Serbs who marked XX Century-Five Hundred of Persons” (2005), and in “Srpski Who is Who” (2013).
